Dark Circle Treatment

Very frequently patients come into, Beverly Hills Profiles with all different skin types and textures looking to improve dark circles under their eyes. Patients will often complain about taking pictures in certain lighting finding that there is always a dark stripe under the eye. As this has been a topic of conversation over the years, there are a number of options to help with dark circles under the eyes. We are especially excited about the introduction of lasers into the armamentarium of dark circle solutions.

Before having a procedure to correct dark circles under the eye, no matter the treatment option, it is important to take into account a number of factors, and to look at the skin itself. Often Middle Eastern and East Indian patients will notice that the skin under the eye is darker than the rest of the skin on their face. In these cases a skin bleach will be used, usually something that contains a 2% concentration of hydroquinone or higher.

Hydroquinone works by reducing the pigment production in the skin, sometimes a prescription strength is needed. With this method you will see dramatic results after a period of about 6 to 8 weeks of application. Something we like remind our clients is that many of our procedures should be looked at as projects and patients should not expect results immediately.

In some cases Hydroquinone reaches a plateau on what kind of results it is able to deliver. When this happen the next step would be to discuss other treatments, such as, laser treatment and fat transfer.

Fat Transfer
Fat transfer can be used to correct dark circles If the eye socket is actually hollow, if there is a loss of volume or the cheekbones are relatively deep set. Transferring fat can make this area appear more rejuvenated making dark circles less less visible.

IPL Lasers
After patients have already tried skin bleaching and have not seen a reduction in dark circles, we can then add IPL lasers to the process. This will help to break up superficial pigmentation. It is sometimes combined with a 1540, a skin resurfacing laser, to get a turnover of superficial skin so that the next layer of skin that grows back will not be quite as dark.

Not all IPL Lasers are the same, there are some older, inferior IPL filters that do not have the same level of filter or technical modalities added that allow the provider to use to same level of energy or fluids to be able to get the change you need. Some patients come to Beverly Hills Profiles after already receiving multiple IPL laser treatments and are reluctant to try again.We encourage these patients to try the treatment again with us because our practice has one of the best IPL lasers available. Inferior lasers will not be able to provide the same results as ours. Our laser has SkinTell, which measures how much pigmentation is in the skin allowing us to be as safely aggressive as possible without causing burning or other problems.
